When it comes to vision correction surgery, LASIK and LASEK are the most well-known procedures. But do you know the exact differences between the two? Let's explore the definitions, characteristics, and key differences between LASIK and LASEK.

LASIK

LASIK is a vision correction surgery where a corneal flap is created using a laser, then lifted to apply the laser to the corneal stroma to reshape it and correct vision. After the procedure, the flap is repositioned, allowing for faster recovery and less pain compared to LASEK.

However, since creating a corneal flap is essential, the corneal thickness must meet certain conditions for the surgery to be performed. Additionally, extra caution is needed to avoid external impact immediately after surgery, as the flap is vulnerable to displacement.

LASEK

LASEK is a vision correction surgery that does not create a corneal flap. Instead, the corneal epithelium is removed, and a laser is applied to the corneal stroma to correct vision.

Since only the epithelium is removed, more corneal tissue remains compared to LASIK, making it more resistant to external impact. However, LASEK causes more pain than LASIK, and strict post-surgical care is required until the epithelium regenerates.

It takes about five days for the epithelium to fully heal, during which a protective contact lens must be worn, and extra caution is needed.

Differences between LASIK and LASEK?

LASIK has less pain and a faster recovery, allowing vision to improve the next day, but it is more vulnerable to external impact. On the other hand, LASEK may cause more discomfort compared to LASIK, but it is more resistant to external forces.

Therefore, the choice between LASIK and LASEK depends on personal lifestyle habits and activities. Since suitability for each procedure varies based on eye condition, it is best to understand the characteristics of both surgeries and undergo a detailed examination at an eye clinic before making a decision.
